Source: The Indianapolis StarSept. 05--One of the most impressive and important voices in the debate over the city's future in recent years has belonged to Michael Huber, the former top aide to Mayor Greg Ballard who next week takes over as president and CEO of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce.Huber is one of those behind-the-scenes guys who gets a lot of attention because he always seems to be working on something big and groundbreaking while also offering smart takes on moving the city forward. Just 37, he has already left a sizable footprint in the city, crafting the deal that allowed the mayor to pour hundreds of millions into infrastructure work, as well as leading on the development of the CityWay project and the redevelopment of Bush Stadium. Now he's taking over an organization that can use a fresh perspective and a jolt of energy. Based on Huber's record, my guess is the Chamber within a few years will have done quite a few innovative things and emerged as a more important player in the city."What attracted me was the opportunity to take an organization that's been around for 100 years, an organization with a history of playing a great leadership role, and helping to evolve the model to reach a younger generation of emerging leaders," Huber said, adding: "And in doing so, answering the question of how do you help to transform the city?"Huber at his core is a dealmaker, someone who likes to take on complex challenges and bring people together to address them. To find roughly $450 million for infrastructure repair, for instance, he spent months crafting a deal to sell the water company and sewer works to Citizens Energy. He then successfully revitalized the long-stagnant effort to bring new life to the old Bush Stadium. For the past year, he has worked at the airport on deals to raise revenue in tough times. It's important to note that Huber, a Republican, has done this while building close relationships on both sides of the aisle -- despite working in political posts during hyperpartisan times for Ballard and, before that, former Gov. Mitch Daniels. Both Democrats and Republicans advocated for him to get the Chamber job. The reason? His interest is in getting things done and not playing politics. As Gordon Hendry, a Democrat who worked with Huber on a Massachusetts Avenue development project, put it: "Mike doesn'儲存 get bogged down in politics; he is all about results."Though Huber initially didn't see the Chamber job as a great fit, his mind changed when key board members asked him to help define the job. For him, that meant less marketing and salesmanship and efforts to encourage a younger generation of leaders. He wants to better plug members into the challenges that government, nonprofits and grass-roots organizations face."I realized (during talks with the Chamber) that I could use my background to create more collaborations," he said. "If you can create more of these collaborations, not only can you transform the city but you can create a more motivated base of members."For instance, he said, business and real estate experts could be brought into the frustrating fight against abandoned homes. Financial experts can play a bigger role in helping the city deal with its massive budgetary challenges, just as some of them are now working with Indianapolis Public Schools.A few big-picture thoughts will guide Huber in his new job. First, he said, priorities and agendas should be set with an eye squarely on how they impact quality of life in the city and the ability to retain and recruit smart, innovative people. As such, the Chamber must effectively advocate for transit and education reform, he said. And he plans to aggressively link emerging entrepreneurs with like-minded up-and-comers and those who have already established themselves. As we talked over lunch at the airport, Huber rattled off a list of creative leaders who have emerged in recent years, people such as Polina Osherov, who runs Pattern Magazine, and Michael Bricker at People for Urban Progress, which, among other things, orchestrated the unique salvage and reuse of the RCA Dome roof. One of his goals is to make sure such people feel welcome in the circa 2013 Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. Why? To ensure they stay in the city."Indianapolis has separated itself from the pack of many midsize Midwestern cities," he said, "but we have a lot of work to do to become one of the top American cities for attracting and retaining talent."That will indeed take a lot of work. But putting Huber at the forefront of that effort is a very good start.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Indianapolis Star Visit The Indianapolis Star at .IndyStar.com Distributed by MCT Information Services新蒲崗迷你倉

Former Vancouver man gets 11 years for bilking elderly
Source: The Columbian, Vancouver, Wash.self storageSept. 06--A former Vancouver resident was recently sentenced in San Diego to serve 11 years in a California state prison and pay $3 million in restitution for operating a phony insurance company and bilking elderly clients.Michael B. Woodward, 50, pleaded guilty to residential burglary, theft from an elder, theft greater than $500,000, transacting insurance without authorization and failure to file a state tax return. His wife, Melissa J. Woodward, 48, pleaded guilty to failing to file a tax return and was sentenced to probation. When Woodward lived in Vancouver and was selling plans to senior citizens, he was investigated -- nearly two dozen times by one agency alone -- but never charged with a crime. The prosecution of Woodward, who had his license to sell insurance revoked in Washington and Oregon, was the result of an investigation by the California Department of Insurance and the San Diego County District Attorney's Insurance Fraud Unit. The Woodwards were arrested April 10 at their home in Las Vegas and extradited to San Diego, according to a news release from the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. They entered their guilty pleas in June and were sentenced on Aug. 8 in San Diego County Superior Court.400 victimsTheir approximately 400 victims in California, including more than 200 people in San Diego, ranged in age from 80 to older than 100."(The Woodwards) would target elderly senior citizens at their homes, telling them that for a prepaid annual fee, the victim could get an unlimited amount of non-medical services such as cooking, cleaning, bathing, toileting, dressing, laundry and shopping. To receive services, he told the victims, they should call him and provide a doctor's note."But the Woodwards were the business' only employees, according to the San Diego District Attorney's Office. The most Woodward would do for clients was hire a third party to provide services, or reimburse clients after they had to pay out-of-pocket.Inexpensive claims were often paid, but other times Woodward would reject claims or not return phone calls."The defendants in this case were ruthless and heartless in the way they targeted the elderly and sold them fake insurance policies," San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis said in a news release.Woodward's "fraudulent activities in San Diego follow similar actions in other states including Washington, Oregon, Minnesota and Texas. In all, be bilked victims out of nearly $6 million across the nation," according t迷你倉 the press release. "When dealing with senior citizens, he often used fake names such as Mike Woods or Mike Smith, making it difficult to research his past."Nearly $2 million in assets, including a home and condominium in Las Vegas, jewelry and artwork, were seized from the Woodwards and will be liquidated to help pay restitution, according to an article in The San Diego Union-Tribune.Investigated locallyOn Thursday, Rich Roesler, public affairs manager for the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner, said records show Woodward was investigated at least 23 times."That is highly unusual," he said. "In multiple cases, he provided satisfactory explanations, but in others he was formally reprimanded and, ultimately, we revoked his license."Roesler said Woodward was licensed to sell health and life insurance (including annuities) from 1991 to 2002, when his license was revoked for being "incompetent and/or untrustworthy." Woodward was authorized to sell insurance on behalf of more than two dozen different insurance companies. The case that resulted in the revocation involved an 85-year-old woman who was reportedly not in good physical or mental health, but who used her life's savings to buy an $110,000 annuity."Annuities are insurance contracts that provide a steady stream of income in exchange, typically, for a lump sum payment upfront," Roesler said. "We had substantial concerns about the appropriateness of selling a woman in her situation the annuity that Mr. Woodward sold her."The insurance company ultimately agreed to refund the full amount, plus interest, Roesler said.Roesler said his files showed that when Woodward's license to sell insurance was revoked in Oregon, he appealed but the revocation was upheld because Woodward's actions were "egregious in that he targeted the elderly."Woodward was also the subject of complaints to the Washington Attorney General's consumer protection division. And in 2004, Woodward entered into an agreement with the Oregon Department of Justice over the sale of service contracts, similar to the type he sold in California, under the name Secure Tomorrows. The agreement said if six or more complaints were filed within a year, state officials could ask a judge to find that Woodward violated the Uniform Trade Practices Act and impose a civil penalty.Stephanie Rice: 360-735-4508 or stephanie.rice@columbian.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Columbian (Vancouver, Wash.) Landing title sponsor secures Innisbrook golf tournament
Source: Tampa Tribune, Fla. Sept. 06--The 13-year-old PGA Tour golf tournament draws tens of thousands of people to Palm Harbor each spring and advertises the area to TV viewers across the world.Up until this week, though, there was no guarantee it would return next year. The problem has been getting -- and keeping -- a name and a title sponsor for the tournament.Since its inception, the event has been called the Tampa Bay Classic, the Chrysler Championship, the PODS Championship and the Transitions Championship. In March, with no title sponsor investing big dollars for naming rights, the tournament became the Tampa Bay Championship, meaning the event's organizers at Copperhead Charities and smaller sponsors had to float the tournament financially.Friday, tour officials announced a four-year title sponsorship agreement with paint company Valspar, along with additional backing by BB&T Bank. The agreements mean the tournament's future is on solid financial ground, organizers say."I can't tell you exactly how long we would have made it, but I do know this: We're very excited to welcome both these new partners," Tournament Director Kevin Krisle said. The Copperhead course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club is a favorite for many PGA players, and the tournament gets viewership in more than 220 countries through broadcasts on NBC and the Golf Channel.Last March, the event drew an estimated 75,000 people from 45 different states and generated 6,000 hotel room stays, according to numbers submitted by the tournament to 儲存倉he Pinellas County Tourist Development Authority. The tournament is among so-called elite events such as the Honda Grand Prix in St. Petersburg that receive financial support from the county. The 2014 tournament in March was approved for $125,000 in funds that come from the county's tourist development tax."The media coverage that you get for an entire weekend showing that beautiful course, and, most of the time, fabulous weather, you just can't put a value on that," said Pinellas County Commissioner Susan Latvala, who lives near the course in Palm Harbor. So why was the tournament one of the only events going into next year's PGA Tour without a title sponsor?"In some cases, it's simply a matter of companies rethinking their marketing strategy and redirecting their marketing dollars out of professional sports, in some cases, into other traditional advertising," said Andy Padzer, chief of operations for the PGA Tour.A PGA event in Palm Springs, Calif., went two years without a sponsor before it became the Humana Challenge, Padzer said.Tournaments, though, can't normally survive very long without the financial support of a big brand, he said. The PGA had been considering alternative tour stops during March, when players normally head to Innisbrook, in the event organizers failed to secure a title sponsor, Padzer said.jboatwright@tampatrib.com(727) 215-1277Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Tampa Tribune (Tampa, Fla.) Wireless device repair company rolls out lab on wheels
Source: The Brownsville Herald, TexasSept. 06--BROWNSVILLE -- GC Telecom, a cellphone repair company that launched operations in Brownsville three years ago, is taking its show on the road. The company got its start at the ITECCenter business incubator and now has invested in a mobile repair lab for the purpose of bringing its services to the customer.Besides cellphone repair, GC also works on laptops, PlayStations, XBox, and is a Bose-certified repair center as well. The company has a statewide contract with Sam's Club to fix Bose SoundDock digital music systems, said Benjamin Luna, the company's head of sales and business development."But our main bread and butter is cellphone repair," he said. The mobile rig, a former pipefitting truck from California, has been tested at one location so far: Sunrise Mall, where GC also has a kiosk. Luna also hopes to take the mobile lab to the Rio GrandeValley outlet mall in Mercedes."The biggest thing is to set it up where people can see it," he said. The lab doubles as a billboard on wheels. If the concept is successful in the Valley, GC plans to put trucks in major metro areas like Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, Luna said.To date, the company has depended on drop-off customers at its Sunrise Mall kiosk and at the company's North Expressway headquarters."It's been working great," Luna said. "Business is good. We're happy where we stand. Of course, there's more to do."GC's target clientele is largely comprising cellphone customers who can't afford or don't want the insurance sold by phone manufacturers. It's a quickly growing segment of the wireless-subscriber community, Luna said."This market is booming up in Austin, San Antonio, Houston," he said. "A lot of peopl迷你倉出租 are now starting to do third-party repair instead of going through insurance."As long as GC has the part on hand -- cracked screens are a common issue -- turnaround time is only an hour, he said. The company opened a second location, in McAllen, several months ago and is set to launch an online business selling replacement parts.Research is another aspect of GC's operation, necessary for repairing the newest products on the market, such as fifth-generation iPhones and iPods.GC started in Monterrey, N.L., in the mid-1990s and today has a large Latin American footprint, with hundreds of technicians at repair centers scattered around Mexico, Central and South America.Luna said GC in the Valley has a close relationship with its Monterrey-based sister company, and that his technicians go to that city for training.GC contracts with major wireless providers such as Telcel and Movistar south of the border, and Luna hopes to do the same thing here with Sprint, Verizon or another top U.S. provider.GC's southern contracts didn't happen overnight, of course, but took time to cultivate."It's going to be maybe be about the same thing here," Luna said. "It's going to take a little bit more time."He's thinking one, maybe two years."There's a lot of red tape we have to go through, and of course we want to do it correctly as well," Luna said. "We're going in the right direction."sclark@brownsvilleherald.comGET IN TOUCHGC Telecom Brownsville625 N. Expressway(956) 574-0850GC Telecom McAllen920 W.
