Source: The Pueblo Chieftain, Colo.存倉Sept. 20--Arriving with boards and bikes, an enthusiastic crowd Wednesday embraced city plans to build a wheel park on the East Side."We're here to make sure it's built right this time," said Fred Carley, 33, who runs the Ka Mitt Skate Shop in Pueblo. He was among about 75 people who showed up at a meeting at El Centro del Quinto Sol with Design Concepts and Team Pain to get community input on what should be included in a wheel park. There were rowdy cheers throughout the meeting, even for simple things such as introduction of city staff. The wheel park -- which will accommodate both skateboards and bicycles -- is the $1 million centerpiece of a $2.5 million project that will create a recreation hub to connect the East Side to Fountain Creek.Trails and park improvements are part of the overall plan, which should be drafted by the end of the year.Carley and many other Pueblo skaters told city staff and consultants that while the skate park that was built in City Park in 2006 was designed properly, its construction was done by the lowest bidder."The first park was well-designed, but it was not built anywhere near the plans," Carley said.Team Pain is designing the wheel park, which will be large enough -- 30,00035,000 square feet -- to provide challenges tofrom page 1A ____________________________ local skaters as well as attracting people from out of town."We call it a destinat迷你倉on park, and a park that will offer an experience to Pueblo as well," said Tito Porrata of Team Pain. Not everyone at the meeting was entirely thrilled by the project. One speaker fretted about crime in the area and the closure of two blocks of Erie Avenue.Senior Planner Beritt Odom explained that the project is part of a larger plan to increase use and access on the East Side, which will help make the neighborhoods safer.Scott Hobson, assistant city manager for community development, explained that a one-time plan to incorporate Erie into a north-south artery has been revised.Jasper Quintana, who lives across the street from El Centro del Quinto Sol, was concerned about keeping as many trees as possible."We want to be able to have an entire family be able to come and enjoy the park," said City Councilwoman Eva Montoya, receiving applause, whoops and cheers from the crowd.Outside the meeting, 18-year-old Tucker Bond of Pueblo West was taking a spin on his bike around the dolphin outside the center. He is looking forward to the park."You can come to a park and learn from other people who are better than you," Bond said. "With the size of the city and the number of people who do this, we should have more than one in Pueblo."cwoodka@chieftain.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Pueblo Chieftain (Pueblo, Colo.)
