Source: The Arizona Daily Sun, FlagstaffOct.自存倉 13--Tommy Spencer had been looking for a job for three months, so when he heard about the DREAM Job Fair on Wednesday in Flagstaff, he decided to go.The acronym DREAM stands for Disability and Rehabilitation Employment Awareness Month. The job fair was held in seven locations across the state of Arizona. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The job fairs, sponsored by the Department of Economic Security, Goodwill and other Arizona nonprofits, were held to give individuals with disabilities an opportunity to meet with potential employers and get a job.Spencer said he was filling out applications for some jobs he found out about at the fair. He found openings as a dishwasher, bus driver, cook, and in housekeeping, but really, he said, "I just want a job."Stefanie Vaughn said she came to the fair looking for work and found job openings at the school district and North Country HealthCare that interested her."The fair was very informative," Vaughn said. "I found programs that help people with writing resumes, updating their work history and looking for work."Employers represented at the job fair included Safeway, Little America, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff Medical Center, North Country HealthCare and the Flagstaff Unified School District. The fair was held from 9 a.m. to noon. By mid-morning, it had attracted about 55 people looking for employment, said Liz McGinlay, vice president of Mission Services Goodwill in Flagstaff."Individuals with disabilities are an underserved population; we want to let employers know that they can tap into this employment resource," said Ben Worker, employment-related program supervisor for the Hozhoni Foundation, a nonprofit that provides services for individuals with disabilities.Individuals with disabilities looking for work come from diverse backgrounds and range from the well-educated and trained to people with a high school diploma, Worker said. In this context, individuals with disabilities are defined as anyone with a barrier to employment.Last year, the job fair helped several people get hired "who didn't think they would get hired," he said."We want to educate people about the benefits of hiring individuals with liabilities -- the fact is these people show up for work on time, are committed and loyal workers, who are dedicated to their jobs," McGinlay said."Some companies are committed to hiring a certain percentage of individuals with disabilities," she said, adding Safeway and Walgreens are among those businesses. The government offers tax credits for hiring veterans with disabilities or people with a criminal background, for example, she said.A representative from 迷你倉ittle America was at the job fair. Little America was taking applications for cooks, housekeeping staff, dining room and banquet staff, groundskeepers, gift shop personnel, and laundry and front desk staff, said Nicole Bloom, guest relations and assistant general manager.Bloom said she was impressed that so many people who came to the fair were willing to try to get a job and put their best foot forward."Asked if the company had any particular interest in hiring individuals with disabilities, she said: "We're just looking for good, quality people who want to work hard."North Country HealthCare Human Resources Director David Bianco said he was hiring for patient relations representatives, who work in the front office greeting people, scheduling appointments and taking payments. He said the health care facility was also looking for certified medical assistants, who take patients' vitals such as blood pressure and assist the doctors in other ways."Most of these jobs are sedentary work so it is possible for someone with disabilities to work for us as long as they can perform the essential functions of the job," Bianco said.Asked if he had spoken to any applicants about his job offerings, he said: "A few were interested -- not as many as we'd like."Flagstaff Medical Center was looking for clinical housekeepers, nutritional aides, patient transporters, data entry workers, clerical staff and administrators."We came to the fair as part of our community outreach and we want to utilize the local community -- help locals find jobs," said Amanda Weinstein, recruiter for Flagstaff Medical Center.Safeway was hiring for hourly positions in retail such as cashiers and deli and meat clerks."We like to hire the most diverse workforce we can -- not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of our employees," said Marilyn Kolopanis, employment representative for Safeway.Judy Tincher, administrative and operations specialist for Coconino Rural Environment Corps, said her organization was hiring people to clear the forest and work on watershed restoration.Northern Arizona University has job openings in a variety of areas, including staff, faculty and support staff.Cheryl Goldberg, human resources generalist at NAU, said the university is "just looking to recruit dependable, good people.""It's always nice to meet people seeking employment in the community -- to see so many different people with different skills and in different times of their lives," Goldberg said. "This was a good opportunity to find some talented people."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Arizona Daily Sun (Flagstaff, Ariz.)
