Source: The Porterville Recorder, Calif.self storageSept. 28--The Monache Marauders' resolve was tested as they battled the Reedley Pirates at Sal Gonzalez Field in Reedley Friday night. With both teams looking for their first win of the season, Monache scored one touchdown in each quarter to prevail 28 -- 21 in an evenly matched game.Reedley struck first after recovering the opening kick. Monache fumbled the kick and Reedley recovered on Monache's 9-yard line. Three plays later the Pirates were in the end zone and up 7-0 after the PAT.Monache at its 28 needed 72 yards to answer. Stopped at the Pirates 38, Monache trusted Nick Aguilar to keep the drive alive facing fourth down and three yards and he delivered.Miguel Mejia took the snap at the 12 and brought the Marauders a yard shy of the goal line on a quarterback keeper. Finishing the drive, Aguilar pounded the ball across the goal line. Fernando Robles kicked the extra point to tie the score at 7.Four minutes into the second quarter and starting at their 43, the Marauders took over on downs. After a strong defensive stand, Monache took to the air.Facing second and 16, Mejia dumped the ball to Aguilar on a 20-yard screen pass. Mejia then found Skyler Schrein down the field for 18 yards and Alejandro Andrade for 17 yards.Capping the drive was a gentle pass to a wide open Fernando Rivera in the corner of the end zone. The made PAT gave the Marauders seven-point lead.Hoping to follow the score with a defensive stop, Monache had Reedley's quarterback scrambling. But, on 3rd and 6, Reedley's Daniel Guerrero ran 30 yards to pick up 7 and the first down. A 15 yard penalty put the Pirates on Monache's 13. Gregory Quesada took the handoff and rushed around the left side for a TD. The PAT tied the score at 14.Reedley's Nathan Hernandez received Robles' kick to start the second half at the 5. Exploding up the field, Hernandez brought the ball across the 50 to Monache's 43.However, the Marauders would keep the Pirates there 迷你倉o force a punt. Coming hard at the punter, Monache blocked the punt and recovered the ball on the Pirates 27. Unable to reach the first down marker, Monache turned the ball over on downs.Monache traded punches with the Pirates for 10 minutes of the third quarter unable to gain much ground. But with a couple of passes to Schrein and some big chunks of yards by Aguilar, the Marauders were able to press forward and cross the goal line with Aguilar carrying the ball. The made PAT gave the Marauders a 21-14 lead.Reedley threw a pass deep into Monache territory only to have it picked off by Monache's Mikey Ramirez at his 14. However, with second and 15, Monache gave it back when Reedley's Arturo Tovar intercepted Mejia's pass. The Pirates scored from the 1 to tie the score at 21 after the PAT.The ensuing drive for the Marauders was difficult as they faced fourth and 26 from their 10. The punt put Reedley on the Marauder 47. Monache's defense stopped Reedley and forced a fourth down. Monache hit hard and knocked the ball loose and recovered the ball on its 44. With three minutes left in the game and the score tied, Monache faced its own fourth an seven and chose to go for it. It only managed three yards and gave the ball back to Reedley at midfield.Monache put pressure on the quarterback and caused a fumble. With the recovery, the Marauders started at Reedley's 47. Mejia looked deep and found Eric Hearn running down the sideline. Diving for the ball, Hearn held on before falling to the ground at the 1. Aguilar crossed the goal line to give the lead to Monache, 28-21 after the PAT.The score stood as the final as Monache was able to stop Reedley's last drive at midfield. Mejia passed for 166 yards.
