Architect Ben van Berkel's openness and 'can do' stance towards rules and regulations makes him a go-to guy for his clients. By Tay Suan ChiangDUTCH architect Ben van Berkel is on a roll. His firm, UNStudio, recently completed Ardmore Residence, its first project in Singapore. Three more are in the works - the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) campus, The Scotts Tower condominium, and mixed use development V on Shenton. SUTD will be ready in 2015, while the other two are expected to be completed in 2016. For a small country, this is a fairly large number for a foreign architect to have. Asked if he is surprised by it, the amazingly down-to-earth architect says instead, he is very honoured. "I feel very comfortable to be working in Singapore," he says. "Ten years ago, I didn't think I would have projects here."He adds: "A lot of people ask me why I like working in Singapore when there are so many regulations to follow. But I tell them, there are even more regulations in Holland. I see them as a challenge rather than as restrictions."Perhaps it is because he constantly "strives for a form of uniqueness" that makes him so popular. "I go for a goal, a story, with each project," he says. For Ardmore Residence, it is about playing up the views which the apartments enjoy. The apartments come with double-volume balconies where the living and dining areas are on one side and bedrooms on the other. The facade has intertwining lines and surfaces that seamlessly incorporate sun-screening. From a distance, the tower appears to adopt vastly divergent contours when viewed from different perspectives, which is what Mr van Berkel intended. "Even though the Residence is private, I see it as a public building as people will see it. It becomes a landmark in its vicinity, so I need to give it some form of identity," he says.He finds it fascinating - "what people do in their lives - the way they live, work . . . their patterns of behaviour."As an architect, he says, he also has to look into the future, to see how people will work and live. The way humans behave is part of his design philosophy. He cites the example of SUTD, where the building can no longer be like Cambridge or Oxford campuses, each building separated from the other."Today students like to be closer to each other, therefore, I made the SUTD campus compact," he says. "There are also plenty of public spaces within campus, where students and lecturers can meet and exchange ideas."Because of his various projects, he is in Singapore at least five times a year. "Singapore has radically changed over the last six迷你倉years, and there are high-quality projects. I can see there is a lot of urban planning in the city", he says.Apart from Singapore, the firm has been leaving its mark on other cities. In fact, about 90 per cent of their work is overseas, with about 11 per cent in the Netherlands. "Ten years ago, it was the other way around," he says. "So I have had to change our culture of working."Mr van Berkel, 56, finds it difficult to name his favourite foreign city where he prefers to work. "I've had good experiences in Singapore, because I can fit in easily. And it is clear that I can produce quality architecture in Singapore."In China, he finds it a more complex process and of South Korea, he says it has been a positive experience. The firm is known for buildings such as the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart and the Galleria department store in Korea. An ongoing project is the construction of Raffles City in Hangzhou. "I've learnt how to communicate at each city through different mechanisms," he says. He adds that often it pays to have a proactive attitude, to inform clients more than they would expect. "I have learnt to be a social scientist to bring projects together. The role of an architect is now that of a multifaceted communicator."Mr van Berkel entered the architecture scene "fairly late, when I was 25". He dabbled in interior, graphic and furniture design, before finding his calling in architecture. "What I did for graphic design would be seen in books and then that was it," he says. "But with architecture, it is a designed project for life. Architecture gave me more ambition to grow."He studied architecture at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and at the Architectural Association in London. In 1988, together with his business partner Caroline Bos, they started Van Berkel & Bos Architectuurbureau. Ten years later, the firm changed its name to UNStudio, short for United Network Studio, referring to the collaborative nature of the practice. Mr van Berkel is still active in furniture design. Among the pieces he has created include chairs for brands such as Offecct, Walter Knoll and Wilde+Spieth. "Furniture design is very tactile. You feel the product and it is close to the body," he says. "In comparison, architecture is further away, in the background."But the two have similarities. "You have to find the right material and bring the details together. Just like how I make prototypes of chairs, we do the same for buildings by creating mock-ups." He adds: "Often the time spent on creating a good piece of furniture is the same as time spent on good architecture".taysc@sph.com.sg儲存

self storage

Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.mini storageM.Oct. 18--Thursday was a busy day at Pecos National Historic Park, which opened for the first time in 16 days due of the federal government's partial shutdown."We're all really happy. It's great to come back and be able to do what we do well," said Dennis Carruth, superintendent of the park about 20 miles east of Santa Fe that features the ruins of a pueblo and a nearly 400-year-old Spanish mission church.During the federal government shutdown, Curruth added, "The hardest thing I had to do was to tell people, 'I'm sorry, but you can't visit your national park.' "Carruth said most of the 17 federal employees that work at the site were back on the job Thursday."We're doing what we need to do to reopen the park and make sure it's safe for visitors. We're also catching up on administrative work that we've fallen behind on -- paying bills and catching up on mail," he said. "We've got our ruins preservation crew working on stability -- doing patch work from all the rain we had. With the shutdown, all of that had stopped."Carruth said two rangers stayed on during the shutdown to patrol the park and spot check water systems and furnaces, and he came in periodically to check emails and participate in conference calls.During that the time, none of them were being paid. But an amendment to the legislation that was approved by Congress on Wednesday night provides that federal employees will receive back pay."Trust me," Carruth said, "we would have liked to earn our money. I'm just glad that our people here were able to recoup the money that would have been lost through no fault of their own."Visitors to the park were happy, too.The government reopening helped salvage vacation plans for Barbara MacNemar and Shelton Cannon, of Millersville, Md., who were making their first visit to New Mexico."Part of the reason we came to New Mexico was to see the national parks," MacNemar said, adding that seeing pueblo ruins were also on their agenda. "This is the last day of our trip, so we're glad we were able to see this one."Earlier this year, MacNemar purchased a pass that gave her access to any national park in the country. She was disappointed, though, she wasn't able to use it to visit Bandelier and Petroglyph national monuments (both of which opened Thursday) during the shutdown, before having to go back to Maryland.Bill Swanstra and Renee Benser-Swanza left their home in Gladwin, Mich., on a three-week vacation Oc迷你倉. 2, the second day of the government closure. "There was a lot of disappointment along the way," Bill said. The couple wanted to visit the Eisenhower and Truman presidential libraries in the Midwest, but they were closed. One of their main destinations was the Grand Canyon. "We're glad we were able to see this one and the Grand Canyon."Ohio residents Rex and Peg Lavoie were headed to Arizona to work as volunteers at Tonto National Monument. Now retired, the couple spend most of their time traveling around the country in an R.V. and volunteering at parks and monuments, usually someplace cool during the summer and somewhere warm during the winter months. They are between seasons now, not required to report to Tonto until Nov. 1."I'm glad the parks are open now. I was hoping not to have to stay homeless," Rex quipped."This is our natural time off," Rex said. "Having the time and not being able to go to the parks has been frustrating."Kathy Wood and Rosemary Busterna of Northglenn, Colo., were equally annoyed. "The frustrating part is the national parks belong to us, and we couldn't go see them," Busterna said.Wood said she and Buster-na had planned their trip for a year and several national parks were on their itinerary."We came down to see a bunch of national parks and this is Day 1," she said.

Source: Milwaukee Journal SentinelOct. 17--It's hard to believe any songwriter would pen a tune in honor of American military leaders from the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, but 150 years ago many marches were written for generals and colonels.During the Civil War, music was more than a way to move armies quickly onto battlefields or remember the dead; it was also a form of propaganda. At a time when illiteracy rates, especially in rural areas, were high and communications were limited, sheet music was a way to convey information and to rally people."Even if you couldn't read, you could sing," said Robert Curtis, a retired University of Georgia history professor and sheet music collector.Curtis is coming to Milwaukee this weekend to speak about the role of sheet music in the Civil War. Sheet music collectors are meeting Friday and Saturday for the American Sheet Music Conference at the Irish Fest Center, 1532 N. Wauwatosa Ave. in Wauwatosa. Because of the Civil War sesquicentennial, sheet music from that era will be spotlighted."People find the Civil War so interesting. It was so complex. When President Lincoln heard 'Dixie,' he liked the song and often sang it," said Barry Stapleton, director of the Ward Irish Music Archives, which is hosting the conference. The Ward Irish Music Archives at the Irish Fest Center is the largest public collection of Irish and Irish-American music in the United States. This week, much of the collection was placed online -- irishsheetmusicarchives.com -- though music post-1923, which is still copyrighted, will be somewhat restricted. The conference is open to the public, with as many as 50 sheet music collectors expected to attend. Aside from listening to period music played by musicians and looking at sheet music for sale by vendors, visitors will hear seminars on the importance of sheet music to both the Union and Confederate armies.Curtis is handling the seminar on the South where music publishing companies opened in places such as New Orleans, Nashville, Tenn., and Mobile, Ala., when access to publishing companies in the North was restricted during the war.Printing apparatus was smuggled through enemy lines into the South and later in the war it was difficult to get ink and paper to print sheet music, Curtis said. That is why much of Confederate sheet music now in collections can easily be spotted -- the paper is flimsier, often with ink of poor quality.Sheet music instilled patriotism, introduced n迷你倉w military leaders and explained secession, Curtis said."It tended to give voice to a lot of feelings that not only soldiers but people on the home front were feeling," said Curtis, whose ancestors fought for the Confederacy. "Late in the war when things started going bad, the music and lyrics tried to put backbone into the people to keep them going. It was an attempt to instill various emotions."Some sheet music was very colorful with beautiful artwork and would likely have been purchased only by the wealthy, explained Jeff Ksiazek, archivist at the Ward Irish Music Archives. Most of the sheet music features piano accompaniment, not full musical scores. As Ksiazek and Stapleton examined several pieces of Civil War sheet music in the archives this week, Stapleton pointed out the difference between smaller pieces of paper that included only lyrics, not music, and expensive sheet music -- tunes adorned with pictures of Gen. George McClellan standing next to his white horse and Gen. Thomas Sweeny, who lost his right arm in the Mexican-American War and commanded a brigade at Shiloh."These would have been pricey back in the day," Stapleton said of the sheet music, noting that the smaller, simple ones were "called penny ballads and would have been sold on the street for a penny."Though many people collect Civil War memorabilia, a much smaller number concentrate on sheet music, said Curtis, who has 400 to 500 pieces in his collection. He began collecting Civil War Confederate currency and bonds, but when he saw illustrated sheet music he became attracted to the artwork.By the 1920s, artwork mostly disappeared on sheet music published in America.Sheet music collectors often specialize by acquiring music from specific wars or universities or transportation such as nautically themed music, said Stapleton."Some are music buffs, a lot are historians interested in some aspect of history. Sheet music is a historical document," Stapleton said.Conference detailsWhat: The American Sheet Music Conference.Where: The Irish Fest Center, 1532 N. Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.迷你倉M.Oct. 18--SANTA FE -- New Mexico's national parks and monuments, barricaded to the public for 16 days during a federal government shutdown, moved quickly Thursday to throw open their gates.Visitors from far and wide, barred from being able to take in some of the state's most photographed sights, were happy to come on in.At Pecos National Historic Park near Santa Fe, which is run by the National Park Service but is not counted as one of the state's 11 national parks or monuments, tourists were in good spirits as they took in the historic ruins. The government reopening helped salvage vacation plans for Barbara MacNemar and Shelton Cannon, of Millersville, Md., who were making their first visit to New Mexico."Part of the reason we came to New Mexico was to see the national parks," MacNemar said, adding that seeing pueblo ruins were also on their agenda. "This is the last day of our trip, so we're glad we were able to see this one."Earlier this year, MacNemar purchased a pass that gave her access to any national park in the country. She said she was disappointed she wasn't able to use it to visit Bandelier and Petroglyph national monuments. At Bandelier, near Los Alamos, visitors began showing up soon after the site was opened at noon."We've only been open an hour, and we're very, very busy," Bandelier spokeswoman Chris Judson told the Journal on Thursday afternoon. The buses that normally shuttle visitors to Bandelier's visitor center were not running Thursday but are expected to resume operations today, she said.At Carlsbad Caverns National Park in southeastern New Mexico, maintenance workers came in early in the morning to tidy up the main road leading to the iconic caverns. The park then opened to the public at its normal time."Everyone was salivating to go back to work," said park Superintendent John Benjamin, who had put his retirement on hold due to the partial government shutdown. He said employees were notified Wednesday that they should prepare to return to work if Congress approved legislation ending the government shutdown. Such legislation was adopted late Wednesday and quickl文件倉 signed by President Barack Obama.Eighty-five Carlsbad employees -- out of roughly 90 employees on staff -- were furloughed during the government shutdown, Benjamin said.Workers returning to their jobs Thursday morning found two minor incidents of vandalism that had occurred at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, one of which involved obscenities written on a "closed" park sign."I think most of our staff are considered suspects," Benjamin joked.Meanwhile, the largely volunteer staff at Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument near Silver City was excited to be back on the job, said Rodney Sauter, the monument's chief of interpretation and acting superintendent.About 30 visitors had made their way to the cliff dwellings by late Thursday afternoon, said Sauter, who described the attendance number as slightly lower than average.Unlike some other Western governors, Gov. Susana Martinez declined to reopen national parks during the shutdown by tapping state accounts, saying it was the federal government's responsibility to keep the park system running.Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Zion National Park in Utah were among the parks reopened at states' expense. In New Mexico, Martinez and top-ranking lawmakers have voiced concern about the shutdown's impact on tourism and other sectors of New Mexico's economy.State budget officials have said it's too early to tell how much money the situation in Washington, D.C., might have cost the state in terms of lost tax revenue. In addition to the National Park Service, other federal agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management resumed their New Mexico operations Thursday. Facilities and programs run by those agencies were also affected by the 16-day shutdown.Journal staff writer T.S. Lastcontributed to this report.
