Source: The Daily News, Jacksonville, N.迷你倉C.Dec. 31--DIXON -- This was a perfect way for Jeffrey Williams to end what seemed to be a flawless shooting night by the Southwest senior.Williams' scored on a short jump shot as time expired to lift the Stallions to a 77-76 win over Jacksonville on Monday night in the championship game of the Onslow County Classic at Dixon High School. The Stallions had the ball along the left sideline near midcourt with 3.1 seconds left following a timeout by Southwest coach Tommy Barnes.Williams received the ball and dribbled inside the 3-point arc and to the left wing before letting go a floater that hit nothing but net to set off a wild celebration near the baseline."I tried to get open and get to the corner and shot," Williams said. "But I thought I was going to miss it."Fortunately for the Stallions (4-1), Williams didn't, something the guard didn't do much of all against the Cardinals (4-6). Williams finished with a game-high 31 points on 10-of-15 shooting. He was 6 of 7 on 3-pointers and 5 of 7 on free throws. No wonder Barnes opted to go with Williams on the final play."It's great for us to run a play we've been practicing on and it's great that Jeffrey hit that shot," Barnes said. "We wanted him to go straight to the hole, and I don't know whether he saw the clock or what, but he pulled up. He'd been hot so we went with him and he came through."Williams was named the tournament's most valuable player. He just wasn't going to be denied on this night."It's tough to lose on a last shot, but there's nothing we did wrong," Jacksonville coach Doug Erny said. "We had the right defense called and the right people guarding him. The kid just made a great shot and you have to give him credit."Williams' game-winner was set up after Jacksonville's Billy Bodette missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 8.4 seconds left and the Cardinals up 76-75. Moments earlier, Williams scored on a layup with 33 seconds remaining following a steal by J'Veon Walker that put Southwest to within one.The Stallions then rebounded a missed Jacksonville shot, but the Cardinals got the ball back when Walker missed two free throws, forcing Southwest to foul Bodette."We had three possessions at the end of the game where we didn't execute the way we should have," Erny said. "A lot of that came from us having some young kids on the court, and that's my fault. I shouldn't have put them in that situation."You're just going to win your share of these games and you're going to lose your share of them."William's buzzer-beater was perhaps a fitting way to end a wild tournament final that featured just about everything. There were big leads as the Stallions jumped to a 17-3 margin and later led 37-19 midway through th文件倉 second quarter. Southwest also led 65-59 heading into the final quarter. Then there was a rally as the Cardinals used a 6-0 run in the fourth quarter to take a 74-71 lead following a 3-pointer by Tavian Cooley with 2:37 left. And there were impressive standout performances by players from both teams.Williams' 31-point effort was nearly matched by Jacksonville senior Chris Smith, who scored 26 points, including 13 in the third quarter. He also made 4 3-pointers."We grew up together playing basketball," Williams said of Smith.Bodette, a junior, added 23 points and 12 rebounds. He had 11 in the second quarter.Cooley added 13 points and Denzel McKnight added 10 points for the Cardinals, who for the third consecutive games were led by Bodette and Smith."Chris and Billy are our two go-to guys," Erny said. "They are two of our better players and two of the better players in the area."Meanwhile, Williams was complimented by 18 points by Walker, a senior who also excited the Southwest fans with a pair of one-handed slam dunks. Malique Judd added 12 points for the Stallions."This game was real fun," Williams said.Southwest stormed out of the gates, scoring the game's first 10 points off solid pressure defense -- in addition to Williams' shooting touch -- to grab the big early lead over the Cardinals."We didn't do a very good job in the first quarter of taking care of the basketball," Erny said.Simply, the Stallions came out energized."Coach Barnes tells us to play hard and that's what we had to do," Williams said. "Hustle, that's all we did."And in the end, the Stallions emerged as the Onslow County Classic champions for the second time since the event's inception in 2006. Southwest also won it in 2010. The Stallions lost to Northside in last year's final."What a great win. I'm just so proud of the kids because they showed that they do have a little heart," Barnes said. "It means a lot to our guys because they hadn't won any tournament. This is big because of the short time of practice we've had. I just hope the kids realize that hard work pays off and that they still have to stay with it."Jacksonville 13 24 22 17 -- 76Southwest 19 25 21 12 -- 77JACKSONVILLE (76)McKnight 10, Smith 26, Morgan 2, Cooley 13, Glynn 2, Bodette 23.
