Source: Tulsa World, Okla.mini storageDec. 17--From several monster pop acts at the BOK Center to rising country artists playing small shows at Cain's Ballroom, 2013 was a big year for live music in Tulsa.Justin Bieber kicked off the year in a big fashion with a huge sold-out show in early January. Since then, every month has featured a highly-anticipated show or event in Tulsa, including two shows by Paul McCartney, John Fogerty playing a surprise set with ZZ Top, a snowy Parrothead paradise and an outdoor music festival that drew tens of thousands downtown. And if early bookings are any indication, the trend will continue in 2014 with bigger shows on the horizon. Here were some of the biggest and best shows of the last year.JanuaryJustin BieberIt didn't matter that it was a Wednesday in early January, the Beliebers were out in force on Jan. 9 when the pop sensation stopped in town. And it was everything the Justin Bieber fans wanted. He even flew through the arena, sending the whole crowd of mostly pre-teens into a tizzy."The 18-year-old Canadian's stage presence was assured, moves polished, coyness gone, especially in comparison to his sold-out concert here in 2010," said former Tulsa World music writer Jennifer Chancellor in her review. "The transformation into an adult soul-pop star, I dare say, is nigh complete."FebruaryThe WhoIt was a night at the rock opera on Valentine's Day when The Who performed their "Quadrophenia and More" tour at the BOK Center. It was a massive show featuring a big display to support the band's "other" rock opera, "Quadrophenia." It had big sounds with Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend and company performing the songs from that tell the story of a kid overcoming his parents, society and his peers. The hits came later, but it didn't matter. It was a The Who experience many won't forget.MarchWillie NelsonThe country legend played twice at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tulsa. The shows were big sets full of Nelson's biggest hit from his long-spanning career. At The Joint, it was an intimate experience with Nelson on both sold-out nights, March 15 and 16."The 79-year-old wasted no time as he walked on stage, raised his hand to the cheering crowd and foisted his guitar strap over his shoulder," Chancellor wrote in her review.AprilMiranda LambertLambert has been graciously adopted as an Oklahoman since marrying Blake Shelton and the two living on a ranch near Tishomingo. It adds to the atmosphere and rapport between artist and audience.Lambert's April 13 show at the BOK Center benefited from such rapport. Her rocking country guitar and voice sounded right at home. The show also featured country star Dierks Bentley for a unique concert event. From Jennifer Chancellor's review: "During his set, which warmed into hers, Bentley called Lambert 'One of the greatest singers in all of Oklahoma history ... and one of the best singers of all history.' She proved him right."MayPaul McCartneyThe sets that Paul McCartney plays are notorious for being just about as long as his career. From the Beatles to Wings to his current solo ventures, McCartney has a lot to choose from and does not disappoint fans during his shows.Tulsans had the good fortune to have two chances to see the performer, which kicked off fifth anniversary celebrations at the BOK Center this year.McCartney pulled out all the stops for the show, showcasing rock history during the set.And he showed he was a class act: McCartney talked extensively about his love for Oklahoma and dedicated some of the proceeds to tornado relief from the massive storms that affected central Oklahoma in May.JuneTurnpike TroubadoursThis group of alt-country and red dirt musicians from Tahlequah play Tulsa regularly, but one recording this year was a bit different. The band performed outside Cain's for the CMT show "Concrete Country," putting the 迷你倉ndependent band on a national platform and showcasing one of Oklahoma's most iconic venues. The program aired in August.JulyCenter of the Universe festivalA free music festival in downtown Tulsa featuring local as well as big-name national acts? It was a reality in 2013.It was the first shot at the festival set on Main Street in the Brady District. Taking advantage of the area's huge growth, music streamed out of downtown all weekend, from One Republic, Neon Trees, OK GO, The Mowgli's and many more.Organizers estimated 80,000 people came through the festival over two days, which also featured art and food throughout the area. There were a few bumps along the way with the show, but with such a big turnout and response, 2014 could see the beginning of a trend.AugustTaylor SwiftTaylor Swift has been riding high in the pop music world, earning many awards and recognition for her most recent album, "Red."Her Aug. 7 show was her third time to headline a tour at the BOK Center, each one a huge hit and a big event in downtown.Swift was awarded the Country Music Association's Pinnacle Award earlier this year, only awarded to one other person: Oklahoma's Garth Brooks. It's meant to highlight an artist's global influence and help spreading country music. In Tulsa, where country music is well established, it felt a bit like a visit from an old friend.SeptemberJessi Colter and Shooter JenningsTo mark the 75th anniversary of the Will Rogers Memorial Museum, there was a musical reunion of sorts at Cain's Ballroom.Jessi Colter, widow of the outlaw country legend Waylon Jennings, took the stage with her son, current outlaw country star Shooter Jennings, for the first time in a long time. The mother and son were playful and heartfelt in the songs they performed together on the historic stage, where Waylon Jennings first announced to the world that he and Colter would soon have a son: Shooter Jennings.Their sets were fantastic, but the significance of the moment was not to be missed.OctoberBlake SheltonWhat was true for Miranda Lambert's show, playing for a home team, was doubly so for her husband, Blake Shelton. While Lambert has been adopted as an Okie, Shelton is Okie through and through. His Oct. 4 show at the BOK Center was big, raucous and fun, and all that was centered around Shelton's big personality and exciting stage presence. His songs were on point all night and it was a treat to see the man, named the Country Music Association's Male Vocalist of the Year four years in a row, on his home turf.NovemberJustin TimberlakeThe reigning king of pop showed Tulsa why he holds that crown with a big performance at the BOK Center on Nov. 21.After an eight-year break from music, Timberlake released two new albums this year and went on tour, his first big tour since the BOK Center opened five years ago. We're glad he had a place to play here in town that was big enough to contain his massive and mobile set.Three hours of hit songs kept the crowd on its feet all night. Hopefully the next time he goes on tour, Tulsa is a stop and it's not in eight years.DecemberJimmy BuffettDespite the snow and sleet falling all around outside, the BOK Center became an island paradise.Jimmy Buffett's relaxed persona and atmosphere were welcome in Tulsa on Dec. 5, his first performance at the BOK Center and a show that venue leaders have been trying to get since it opened five years ago.It was the last show of 2013 in the year-long celebration of the venue's fifth anniversary. With the BOK Center able to get big acts like it did this year and Tulsa's smaller venues filling the calendar, the future of music in Tulsa looks loud.Jerry Wofford 918-581-8346jerry.wofford@tulsaworld.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)
