SINGTEL does have a programme to reward long-time customers, and I am one of those who have benefited ("Find ways to reward and retain loyal customers" by Mr Peter Loon Seng Chee; Forum Online, Tuesday).迷你倉I have received vouchers and a customised Nets FlashPay card with a preloaded value of $20, in return for my loyal support. While I can empathise with Mr Loon's frustration over the relocation and installation charges, these fees are stated in SingTel's contracts. These charges apply to both old and new customers but are usually waived for the latter to encourage sign-ups.SingTel is not the only one offering perks to new customers; we often read advertisements stating that certain promotions are not for existing customers. In a highly competitive market, it is not uncommon for telcos to offer fr自存倉e or subsidised handsets with mobile-phone contracts, and attractive data plans with broadband contracts, only to recover the cost through operating expenses when the customers relocate or change plans. The Infocomm Development Authority has done its part by requiring telcos to allow number porting if subscribers change service providers. But it can do more by insisting that the telcos present a checklist of the key terms and conditions of contracts to their customers, to ensure these are clearly explained before the customers sign on the dotted line. This is similar to how the Monetary Authority of Singapore regulates the sale of investment instruments such as unit trusts and structured deposits. With the growth in the number of mobile-phone users, consumers must be better protected.Francis Cheng迷你倉
