At 100% Design Singapore furnishing fair, 90 exhibitors will display their waresFind out how furniture prototypes, 3-D printing and other home design elements are created at the second edition of 100% Design Singapore.存倉The three-day furnishing fair, which starts next Wednesday, will focus on craftsmanship this year.In line with its theme, 100% X-Making, there will be about 15 talks and workshops that explore the creative processes behind furniture and interior design.There will also be guided tours to help visitors understand the philosophy of home-grown design studios such as Ministry Of Design and Phunk Studio.Organised by international events organiser Reed Exhibitions, the event is curated by London-based creative consultancy VW+BS, which also handled last year's edition.About 90 exhibitors will display the latest furniture, lighting, home accessories as well as wall and floor coverings at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Marina Bay Sands.The first two days are for trade members while admission is free for the public on Friday.Organisers expect about 5,500 visitors this year, up from 4,667 last year.100% Design Singapore kicks off a busy schedule for the design scene here.Archifest, the annual festival that celebrates Singapore's urban environment, will be held from Sept 27 to Oct 13, while the World Architecture Festival, considered the Oscars of the industry, will be staged here again from Oct 2 to 4.Mr Ian Macready, marketing director of VW+BS, says the exhibition is a good platform to show how far Singapore design has come.The 48-year-old, whose partners in the company include multi-disciplinary designers Voon Wong from Singapore and Benson Saw from Malaysia, says: "The design industry here is at a critical junction, where it is beginning to be taken seriously internationally."The efforts by individuals, the design schools, DesignSingapore Council and the many studios and practices are making strong inroads and producing great work."This is why, he says, the team is back to curate the show, which迷你倉saw design stalwarts such as PatriziaMoroso of Italian furniture company Moroso and furniture and architecture company Four O Nine, take part last year.This year, visitors can expect to see big names such as British home accessories brand Zuzunaga and French fabric and furnishing house Pierre Frey.Returning exhibits include the 100% Materials Feature, which showcases the latest material samples, such as light-emitting fabrics and paper-thin stone sheets made from slate rocks.Look out also for the works of budding designers at Space Nurtures, a contest organised by furniture store Space Furniture, Swiss furniture company Vitra and DesignSingapore Council.Student designers from schools here were asked to redesign the Vitra Vegetal chair, which was first made by French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec in 2008. The prototypes from the 10 finalists will be showcased at the event.Home-grown and international industry players will also speak on topics ranging from designing town hubs to doing business in Asia at seminar sessions.Mr Macready says: "It would be great if people who attend the event go away with some new ideas for their projects and daily life, and many new contacts. Of course, if there is a good conversation about the process of making objects, that would be the best result."For some designers, taking part in the yearly show is a chance to network and spread the word about their new collections.Mr Jerry Low, founder of home-grown furniture label A Balcony who took part last year, will return to show about eight pieces of furniture, such as a coffee table and a cabinet from his latest range for his design collection, JotterGoods.These will be exhibited at the 100% Futures section, where local designers and start-ups display their prototypes for potential investors.The 41-year-old says: "This show brings in an international crowd.
